Listen In: High School Students Talk Math

You told us you learn best from your colleagues, so we’ve been working to build a brand new vault of videos featuring some best practices from top Tennessee teachers. Our hope is that we can provide a window into high-performing classrooms, allowing teachers to watch their peers in action and listen in on student discussions across the state.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing videos from two Tennessee teachers. Today, we introduce Christian Jenkins. Christian teaches math at Antioch High School in Metro Nashville Public Schools.

In this video, Christian explains why he needs to hear his students talk about math during any given lesson. Listen in on some student conversations in his math class. Notice how he prompts his students to explain more, without giving away the answer. He responds to students by saying, “Say more about that,” and “Can you draw a picture of what you are describing?”.

We’re excited to visit even more classrooms in 2015 and showcase what is working so well for teachers across the state. Tell us who we should visit at your school.
