With the goal of encouraging students to be actively engaged citizens, the Tennessee Secretary of State’s office has launched their second annual student essay contest. The topic of the essay contest is citizenship. Winners will receive a TNStars 529 College Savings Program scholarship of $100, $250, or $500 in addition to a trip to the State Capitol. Students in grades K-12 can participate. The deadline to submit essays is November 10.
Lesson plans created by Tennessee teachers are also available online. The plans offer ideas to incorporate civic engagement and citizenship into your curriculum. You can learn more about the essay contest, lesson plans, and other civics resources here.
